Over het algemeen besteden wij reviewers bij ioPages niet zoveel aandacht aan de hoezen van de promo’s die we ontvangen. Deze keer echter moet ik echt een uitzondering maken voor de cover van de biografie die Joe Banks heeft geschreven over het moederschip van de spacerock, Hawkwind. Want die omslag zou rechtstreeks van een nog niet uitgebrachte Hawkwind-plaat kunnen komen, een cover bovendien die uitstraalt dat het gebodene binnenin onweerstaanbaar zal zijn voor de Hawkwind-liefhebber. En dat klopt helemaal want Joe Banks heeft een waar huzarenstuk geleverd. Banks is een broodschrijver die onder meer voor het Engelse PROG pent, dus met de kwaliteit van het geschrevene zit het sowieso wel snor. De ware gouden greep is dat Banks niet alleen, zoals je verwacht van een biografie, de bandchronologie beschrijft, interviews met de bandleden heeft, en de platen bespreekt (bijna op de manier zoals in de onvolprezen serie On Track wordt gedaan). Nee, hij voegt ook een serie essays toe over relevante onderwerpen zoals de geschiedenis van de Britse Psychedelica, de Britse tegencultuur, de heersende sfeer van paranoia in jaren zeventig Engeland, de invloed van de punk en nog zo wat onderwerpen, waarbij hij elke keer de plaats en invloed van en op Hawkwind eraan relateert. Dit maakt Days Of The Underground in feite niet alleen een biografie maar ook een beschrijving van de tijdsgeesten waardoor de band zich de afgelopen vijftig jaar heeft bewogen. And that's absolutely right because Joe Banks has delivered a real feat. Banks is a bread writer who pens for the English PROG, among other things, so with the quality of the written it is mustache anyway. The true golden grip is that Banks not only, as you would expect from a biography, describes the band chronology, has interviews with the band members, and discusses the records (almost in the way that is done in the unsurpassed series On Track). No, he also adds a series of essays on relevant topics such as the history of British Psychedelics, the British counterculture, the prevailing atmosphere of paranoia in seventies England, the influence of punk and so on, where he relates the place and influence of and on Hawkwind to it each time. This in fact makes Days Of The Underground not only a biography but also a description of the zeitgeist that has moved the band over the past fifty years. The book is not only interesting for the Hawkwind fan but for those who are interested in what happened in the glory years of British music. Great piece of work.
